The book of Nehemiah has always held a special place in my heart. It is a powerful testament to what God can accomplish through an ordinary person who carries an extraordinary burden—one rooted in love, compassion, and a desire to honor God.
When Nehemiah heard that Jerusalem’s walls were broken down and its gates burned with fire, he didn’t rush into action or react impulsively. Instead, he wept, fasted, and prayed. He brought his burden before God first. What amazes me most is his patience—he didn’t move until God released him. For four months, he cried out night and day, waiting for divine direction.
This waiting season is one of the greatest lessons from Nehemiah’s story. Sometimes, the holiest and most strategic thing we can do is simply wait on the Lord.
And then—at God’s appointed time—a door opened.
Nehemiah received favor from an unlikely source: King Artaxerxes, a Persian ruler who served no covenant with Israel’s God. Yet Scripture shows again and again that God can move on anyone’s heart to fulfill His purposes. Just as He stirred Cyrus, king of Persia, to rebuild the temple (Ezra 1:1), He stirred Artaxerxes to send Nehemiah home to rebuild the wall.
God will send support from unexpected people and unimaginable places to advance His divine agenda.
When Nehemiah finally arrived in Jerusalem, he accomplished in 52 days what had not been done in nearly 140 years. That alone is miraculous.
But make no mistake—he faced fierce opposition.
Sanballat, Tobiah, and Geshem tried everything to intimidate, distract, and frustrate the work. Yet Nehemiah remained laser-focused. He prayed. He strategized. He built with one hand and held a weapon in the other. He refused to come down from the wall.
Four times, his enemies tried to pull him away from his assignment. Four times he discerned their intentions. And four times he answered with one of the most powerful statements in all of Scripture:
“I am carrying on a great work and I cannot come down.”
(Nehemiah 6:3)
This is the heart of the book—a reminder that when God gives you a mission, you must fiercely guard your focus. Distractions will come. Opposition will rise. But if you stay aligned with God, you will finish what He has anointed you to start.
Just imagine what you can accomplish when you:
Nehemiah left the comfort of the king’s palace because he was on a mission from God. So are you. His life is filled with practical lessons for anyone who is building something for God—whether it’s a family, a ministry, a business, a calling, or a personal assignment.
“Lord, strengthen my hands.”
(Nehemiah 6:9)
Lord, empower my hands to carry out Your plans and purposes in this world. Strengthen me to remain focused, fearless, and faithful in the face of opposition. Help me keep building, and never come down from the assignment You have placed in my spirit. My trust is in You alone. Amen.
